Eclectic Style

Eclecticism goes way beyond a particular style in art: it is distinguished by the point that it was not a distinct style. In general, the term portrays the variety in a single work of a mixture of influences—mainly of components from various historical aspects in architecture, iconic paintings, and colorful decorative creations.

The term eclectic was initially adopted by Johann Joachim Winckelmann to depict the art of the Carracci, who embodied in their masterpieces elements from the Renaissance and classical conventions. Apart from this, the concept of eclecticism first emerged as a movement that incited the Greek philosophers to challenge the traditional aspects and discover contemporary art forms. Later on, eclectic decor became a popular style to use as a design element in a home or office environment.

Eclectic is a prominent adjective in interior design terminology, indicating a decor that includes heterogeneous elements — a combination of textures, eras, variety of styles, trends, and tones. However, very fine artistic details differentiate between a stunning eclectic room and a room that is merely chaotic and messy, with no proper harmony and theme. It is best known for incorporating aesthetic characteristics from both modernism and popular art forms. The eclectic design of home decor is largely exemplary of different ideas, colors, and furnishings.
